Italian

At St Peter’s School, we implement the Italian TCL (Teachers as Co-Learners) program, a research-based and practical approach to language learning. In this program, classroom teachers lead daily language sessions that focus on teaching functional and communicative language relevant to students’ everyday experiences.

Our approach includes:

  • Daily, clear, and structured language lessons delivered by classroom teachers following a sequenced curriculum that builds language skills step-by-step.

  • Integration of language use throughout the school day, encouraging students to apply their skills beyond formal lessons and across different subjects.

  • Teachers learning alongside students, modelling curiosity and risk-taking to create a supportive language learning environment.

  • Regular opportunities for retrieval and review, which help students strengthen their understanding and retention of new language.

  • Instruction grounded in neuroscience and Applied Linguistics principles, such as explicit teaching, reducing cognitive load, ongoing feedback, and frequent practice.

Through the TCL program, we aim to develop confident and engaged language learners who value cultural diversity and are prepared to communicate effectively in a global community.
