Mathematics

At St Peter’s, Mathematics is founded on evidence-based strategies that empower all learners to reach their full potential. We encourage positive attitudes towards learning by developing students’ knowledge and skills that they will draw on in their personal lives.

Curriculum

Our Mathematics program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 from Foundation to Year 6. Our aim is for all students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency within Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.

Our Approach

In alignment with the MACS Vision for Mathematics Instruction, our approach is grounded in Explicit Instruction. New concepts are introduced clearly and systematically by the teacher, ensuring all students are supported at every stage as they move from guided to independent learning.

All classes participate in Daily Reviews to ensure students consistently revise previously taught skills and build essential connections between topics.

A core focus of our Maths instruction is the daily practice of Mental Strategies. We develop fluency and automaticity in the areas of Counting forwards and backwards, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division.

Our Maths program is differentiated through:

  • Small group and intervention/extension support

  • Ongoing assessment

  • Varied tools and use of technology.
